Mysterious Hauntings In Mysterious Places
Halloween has often been a period of time when we let ourselves to get away from the “rational” and open our minds to the possibilities of the “supernatural”. We entertain the fact that there may be spirits haunting our planet for one explanation or another. October, 31st is a great day to break from our usual thinking and go beyond what we typically understand as normal phenomena. On this holiday, also known as All Hallow’s Eve, children dress up in their Halloween costumes and travel around the neighborhood in search of candy. The adults are usually even more active than the kids. They are usually having parties with their friends and often things can get pretty crazy. What if instead of the usual Halloween routine you were offered that opportunity to do something distinctive?
Do people really believe that ghosts or spirits are roaming this world? For most people the answer is no. But still, there are some places around the world and the USA that people insist have some sort of extra-ordinary “4th kind” phenomena going on. So why not try to encounter some of these “Ghosts” at these places and do something “atypical” this year? If you are in the general vicinity of Myrtle Beach, St Augustine, or the Florida Keys consider the opportunity to investigate these ghostly attractions and you may encounter something that you thought could only be a part of your imagination, and why not research these on Halloween, the spookiest day of the year.
Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach, is an attraction that is very distinctive and guests and residents really get a unique experience. At the Ghosts and Legends Theatre on any day of the year you can step through a secret wall at this attraction and enter into a world where you will meet four ghosts represented in human form. You’ll get to encounter Sonny Jim, a slave ghost, or Alice of Hermitage, Edward Teach or Blackbeard, or even a ghost who warns of coming hurricanes who is known as The Grey Man.
While the busy time of year for this attraction is the summertime because of its location they do offer Halloween activities for those looking to visit on that particular day. Of course, on Halloween they offer trick or treating for the kids, but also walking tours and live theatre performances. There are also appropriate Halloween decorations on the premises to create that eerie and spooky mood that is suitable for that time of the year.
St. Augustine’s Ghostly Tours
St. Augustine is a really old city, one of the oldest of all, and this may be why it is considered one of the most haunted places on the planet. You can come here and go on The Ghost Tours of St. Augustine. Here you’ll find the ghost of an old Seminole chief, a famous spirit named Osceola. In Castillo de San Marcos, during the Second Seminole war, Osceola captured and help after being tricked into thinking there was going to be a truce. He later died of malaria in 1838 at Fort Moultrie in South Caroline where he was relocated following his capture in order to avoid the outrage that was sure to follow.
The hauntings that are said to be his spirit in Castillo de San Marcos, are believed to be the consequence of what ended up happening after his death. Frederick Weedon, an Army doctor, detached his head and embalmed it. The head was later lost, and then found again, and finally ended up in the Smithsonian Institution’s collection in Washington in 1885. The legend goes that since Osceola’s head was so mistreated and traveled so much after his death, his spirit became restless and so now he haunts Castillo de San Marcos. Want to see if you can find the spirit of Osceola this Halloween? You’ll have the chance if you come take a ghostly tour.
The Florida Keys have a “Spell” on them
Go to Key West in the Florida Keys this Halloween and experience their annual Fantasy Fest (not for kids). If you’re wanting to be haunted on Halloween there are many opportunities to do so on ghost walks and tours that are presented. You can visit a stop for pirates and many other places filled with questionable individuals and there’s also a creepy place called Tony’s Saloon, which was a morgue between 1852 and 1875.
In 1862, at Fort Zachary Taylor there was a yellow fever outbreak that killed hundreds of Union soldiers. This place is actually in the Florida Keys and is another place you can check out. Howard England, a civil engineer was excavating the site in the 1960’s and said the ghost of Wendell Gardner, a Civil War soldier, visited him and pointed him to another excavation site nearby. An enormous mass of Civil War weapons were discovered on this site. It ended up being the largest collection of Civil War weapons ever found. It was later confirmed by the Garner family that Wendell had died during the yellow fever outbreak that swept through the fort during the Civil War. If you partake in The Haunting of Fort Zachary Taylor ghost tour you will learn that the fort is now haunted by the ghosts of Howard England and Wendell Gardner.
There are only a handful of chances out there if you’re really looking to encounter a spirit. While others will dress up and attend the neighborhood parties on Halloween or go trick or treating or something typical, you now know about some of the opportunities to really do something different. All 3 of these cities provide various wonderful alternatives and lodging accommodations, hundreds of beautiful hotels and resorts, available from the Bluegreen corporation. There are several sites, tales and tours that may put you in contact with the 4th kind and modify what you believed earlier to only be fictional, and what better time to go into the strange than on Halloween.

Traveling And Leisure – Oxymoron?
For me personally, travel and leisure, just like sweet and sour, is surely an oxymoron. I do not consider vacation calming. To the contrary, I still find it stressful, frustrating, and too much like work. My worst problem is thinking about packing a travel suitcase. It’s comparable to The Exorcist and also the Night of the Living Dead, when it comes to sheer terror. I feel like I have been assigned the duty of smashing round pegs into square holes or playing tennis using an unstrung racquet. It just cannot be done (by me anyway)!
Then, there is the planning and worse yet, re-planning, because this date isn’t available, that hotel is booked up, and this flight is full! It is good enough to challenge your patience, if not your sanity.
When these obstacles are already overcome, you must then attend the post 911security theatre playing now at an airport near you!
Actually, if some entrepreneurial genius would just launch a new airline (they’ll refer to it “Air Naked”) for nudists or anyone, for that matter, willing to fly sans apparel, the security lines would move faster than Roadrunner dodging Wile E. Coyote’s falling anvil because even nuns would shed their habit to get past TSA (Totalitarian State of Airport) with some alacrity.
Am i over-reacting, or exactly what! I seriously don’t understand the attitude. One nutcase tries to put his shoe on fire and then we all have to shuffle barefoot through airport security. So i am half expecting to be required to fly “commando” after the underwear bomber incident. Just what next? Some nerd uses his laptop battery to convert his Dasani to hydrogen and oxygen (ala the Hindenberg) and you have to give up water on the plane! Where does it end? Who among us will draw a line in the sand and say, ‘I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!’ It has reached the point that being protected from terrorism is more terrifying than terrorism! So what happened to the United States of America, whose president defiantly quipped, ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself.’ Did that United States of America crumble into same dismal pile of rubble as the twin towers? If so, then the terrorists have chalked up a victory and we are a defeated nation that simply has not acknowledged it.
If I’ve offended anyone with this expression of my views on current travel issues, I do not apologize. I am entitled to my opinion. If you find yourself in disagreement, write your own article. Yes, we have the right of free speech, although anti-terrorist legislation allows it to be “bugged” sans warrant.
Until finally these aforementioned problems are resolved, I’m sure determined for being the essential “staycationer”. A leisure pursuit designed for folks like me. Simply no stressful preparation, planning or packing. Just come home from work one evening, settle into the couch with a six-pack and turn on ESPN. A week or two after, wash, shave and head back to work. Perfection!

Bay Ridge – The Rich Man’s Summer Retreat
Brooklyn, New York contains a lot of world-famous neighborhoods that became iconic stand-ins for the borough as being a result of television and movies. Two such “nabes” are Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge. Dyker Heights is most well-known these days for its annual display of Christmas lights and decorations, erected by residents on their own initiative.
A community tradition that spontaneously began sometime in the 1980s, the practice continues without having any kind of organization whatsoever to this day. Stories from the press and other media came to generate even additional participants, and now, over three decades later, Christmas displays is what Dyker Heights is best known for around the world.
It was originally conceived like a premier suburb for New York’s middle and upper middle-classes, and still remains one from the city’s toniest enclaves, with bucolic streets and well-kept properties. No longer predominantly Italian-American, it has also turn out to be home to quite a few Asians, specially the Chinese. Similar demographic trends have reshaped Bay Ridge, which, in addition to Chinese persons, can count a sizeable Middle Eastern presence, having a small but active Muslim religious community.
Also typically quiet, though not as bucolic with less trees, Bay Ridge can sometimes contain the nearby community of Fort Hamilton, which is the location from the few cultural attractions there are in an otherwise residential bedroom community. The area abounds in parks, nonetheless, and is often a short distance away from those in adjacent neighborhoods like Bath Beach and Bensonhurst. Indeed, the views above the Verrazano Narrows are majestic, and Bay Ridge had also once served being a rich man’s summer retreat.
For an idea of Old Brooklyn, as lived by generations of ordinary individuals, a visit to Bay Ridge is in order. There is usually a charm about the place which is tough to describe and uncomplicated to obtain sentimental over, but it can be a feeling that defines what it means to be from Brooklyn.
