A guide to West Algarve
Algarve is the southern most region of Portugal. Although it is popular, many people still do not know more about the region. Here is a guide to the western region of Algarve also referred to as West Algarve.
The area of West Algarve
It is not entirely clear as to where Central Algarve finishes and West Algarve start. There are several maps with different region markings. In fact a study of these maps can bring up as much as three different answers. Well the most accepted starting point of West Algarve begins at the town of Portimao. Portimao located opposite to Ferragudo, lies on the western bank of the River Arade.
The popular tourist destinations in West Algarve
One of the most popular tourist destinations in West Algarve is Portimao. It is a beautiful holiday destination. It is one of the most famous Algarve towns. It is the second largest town in the Algarve and is full of hustle and bustle throughout the year. The town is actually a shopping market for fishing and commerce.
On the southern boundaries of Portimao is the resort Praia da Rocha. It features high-rise accommodation on the cliff-tops. People keep coming here because of the amazing beaches, the large number of bars and wonderful restaurants. The resort also offers really affordable Algarve Holidays.
Some unlikely tourist destinations
A little towards the east is Alvor, which is not as commercialized village as others. This fishing village is expanding its avenues and there is a growing interest in it amoung tourists. Alvor is located next to a lagoon. It has shallow waters that are really perfect for swimming. The shallow water is located adjacent to the marshlands which further turn in to the beaches backed by sand-dunes.
Another unlikely tourist destination is the historic town of Lagos. Lagos is located along the southwest coast. It is a walled town with its very own natural harbor. It boasts of some really great beaches. The town also traces its roots to Henry the Navigator.
Then there is Praia Da Luz located 10 km west from Lagos. This is a really quiet and very peaceful place. This area is getting very popular as is evident from popping up of new accommodations. The area has a beach side that host several Golf and water sports options. Also the wild and rugged countryside is a really wonderful location for adventurous people.
Last but not the least, a few kilometers away from the Praia da Luz is located the village. It is a really pretty fishing village with beautiful cobbled streets. However the town itself is not very pretty. Another place that should be visited in West Algarve is the Parque da Floresta Algarve Golf Resort with a wonderful golf course. It is located to the north of Salema, Budens.
Apart from the names mentioned above, there are many explored and yet to be explored regions in West Algarve. West Algarve, like other parts of Portugal is a fantastic place that leaves a stunning effect on the tourists and leaves them asking for more.
